How is the first round ranked?

Loosely, by rating: your DUPR rating if you have linked one, your self-rating if not. Each rating is nudged up to half a point either way at random, then everyone is sorted best first. So the opening order is a loose guess. Players with no rating open at the bottom in random order. Changing your self-rating later never reorders a ladder that has started.

Can I join after a ladder has started?

Yes, while the organizer keeps registration open and the roster has room. If the roster is full you go on the waitlist and move in when a seat frees. You choose where to start from the bottom three quarters of the ladder, and you play from the next round. Your first few rounds move you further than everyone else's, so a strong start climbs fast.

What if I can't play a round?

Tick the round under Sit out rounds in the ladder menu before it is drawn. You are left out of that round and your spot is held. Once a round is drawn, use Sub out on your match and your spot opens to the ladder for a sub. Either way your spot is held. The days and evenings you can play in general are your availability, under the avatar menu.

What does "spot held" mean?

Your match in the last round did not count: you were away, it was not played, or it was not finished. You stayed where you were, but some players moving past could change your number. Most of the time you come back within one place of where you left. A bad week early in a season, when everyone is still unsettled, can cost a few places.

How far do players move at the end of a round?

Beating someone always puts you above them that round. How far you move comes from the margin, capped so running up the score stops paying. A close night moves you a little. A dominant night moves you about one step: one place on a small ladder, three or four on a big one. New players move several times that in their first weeks, and the extra fades over about a month of rounds. A match that was not played, doesn't move the players.

What is a sub, and why is one match short?

When the roster does not divide into fours, one match each round is drawn a player (or more) short. It lands at a random place in the order, so the same players are not the ones left short every week. Any member of the ladder can take the open spot, and the spot of anyone who subs out of a match opens the same way. A sub plays that match on top of their own.

Can subbing hurt my rank?

No. A sub's second match can only add to what their own match earned, never take away, and it counts for less than a match of your own. It is worth little unless you win big above your level.

How do I link my DUPR account?

You cannot yet. Linking is coming: you will sign in to DUPR from your profile, and your DUPR rating will be used in place of your self-rating. Until then every ladder opens on self-ratings. Not every ladder will report its matches to DUPR. The ones that do say so on their page, and those are the ones that will ask for a linked account.

Can I leave a ladder and come back?

You can leave any time from the ladder menu. Your record stays, any spot you hold in a match yet to be played opens to the ladder, and the waitlist fills your seat. If you come back later you join like anyone else: pick where to start, and play from the next round.
